It's ideally positioned, just minutes from the town centre and a two-minute walk through the dunes to the beach. A short stroll along the coastal path will take you to Bude Sea Pool – a part natural, part man-made pool that makes a superb spot for open-water swimming in a safe environment. Style & character

8 / 10

The hotel originated as the Summerleaze Court Hotel when it was designed as a beach-front landmark for Bude. The building itself is part of a Victorian terrace, with a New England meets beach-chic vibe and a modern, comfortable and stylish aesthetic. It verges on the hip and provides an upbeat coastal hub to hang out in. The bar design is inspired by a private members' club in Media City, Manchester, and provides the hotel with a brilliant focal point – an eclectic mix of eye-catching furnishings and serene Farrow & Ball Hues reflect the surrounding landscape.

Dining is laidback, in the modern and light-filled restaurant, with a friendly and attentive service. Head chef, Jamie Coleman has crossed the border from Devon to Cornwall, bringing with him a wealth of experience, including two years working at Gidleigh Park under Michael Caines. With a passion for the West Country, Jamie believes the South West have some of the finest ingredients to offer in the UK; expect beautifully curated plates that fuse fresh ingredients to create clean flavours, with emphasis on fresh fish and locally reared meats. Dishes include barbecue beef brisket, curried lamb shoulder, John Dory with sautéed potato and pea vinaigrette and classic fish and chips with crushed peas and French fries.

A breakfast buffet of continental classics is followed up with a selection of cooked-to-order dishes, including kippers, poached eggs and lemon butter, smoked salmon with avocado and pancakes with crispy bacon and maple syrup, with the addition of ‘breakfast bubbles’, Prosecco, at the weekends.
